A REAL Back-to-School Supplies List

Ah yes. The smell of No. 2 pencils is in the air, and class schedules are on the horizon. We’re gearing up for back-to-school time in Lane and Linn counties, and that means making our school supplies list.

In addition to the usual notebooks, pencils, stickers, and the occasional graphing calculator, there are more provisions always worth packing in that well-loved backpack. Check out this slightly updated OP back-to-school supplies list.

Patience. Adjusting to a new grade or back into parent pick-up lanes takes time. Stay in the moment with your young person and appreciate how well you’re adapting and getting things done. Celebrate small victories!

Organization. Does your family have that central calendar you all share? Or is there one person who knows where everyone is at all time? Model organization for your teen so they can learn small habits for keeping their homework assignments and after-school sports practice schedules up to date. Use timers, visual calendars, and check-ins to keep plans clear.

Communication. Talk about expectations for the school year for each family member as the year ramps up. Set regular check-in times on the way home from school, or during meals to learn what’s going on at school, what youth are paying attention to, and what support they might need. Don’t forget to listen. Check in. Be there for each other.

Self-Compassion. Set aside perfectionism for yourself and your child. You are doing the best you can. (Read it again - you’re doing the best you can.) Remember to breathe and be kind to yourself and to your young learner. They’re doing the best they can too.

Connect. Community does wonders when settling into a new school year. Guardians, reach out to fellow guardians or school groups to connect and share ideas and empathy. Encourage your teen to relight school-based friendships, and make new connections too. For girls ages 10-18, they can find community and connection at Ophelia’s Place during after-school drop-in or our planned activities. (Learn how to get started here.)

A new school year can feel like a new start. Among the excitement and energy, remember that some of the school supplies we need are right inside of each of us. You got this.
